Guys look what I made! I'm so happy with the way Mila's Mrs. Claus Boxy Hat turned out!
To be honest, this wasn't the plan. Originally the plan was these very beautiful colour work hats that both girls were going to get with cardigans this Christmas. It turns out that colour work raises my blood pressure and triples the contents of my swear jar. I really need to embrace the fact that, for right now, two handed knitting sits just outside of my patience threshold. After realizing I had switched pattern rows halfway through a round, I had to park that project for a moment when I have less going on. Like in February... 2000 never.
Honestly I'm grateful because this was exactly what I needed. Brainless knitting that makes me feel like I've actually accomplished something at the end of the day. Even if the Christmas cardigans turn out to be more of a New Years cardigans at least they'll have something adorable to open Christmas morning.
I'm not sure at which point it was when I turned to Ash and said, "Hey we should totally make this a kit!", to which she replied, "ok." One day I'm going to test it out but I'm pretty sure there isn't much I could propose that Ash would say no to.
So here it is, our Mrs. Claus Boxy Hat Kits: 2 skeins of our worsted weight yarn in our Poppy and Natural. Each skein has 200 yards and 115 grams. The pattern comes in seven sizes from Elf (head circumference 16") through to adult size large (head circumference 23.25") I knit the adult size small, which I'm going to do for both girls, just so they have them for a few years. Mila's still needs pompoms on the corners but my lefties after the first hat were 69 grams of Poppy and 81 grams of natural. I definitely have enough left to finish Paige's hat and two pompoms each. Side note: I'm going to skip the I-Cords on the sides. Just my personal preference.
If you haven't seen the pattern before, it's a free pattern on Ravelry by Stephanie Lotven and there's actually a sister hat pattern called Mrs. Claus Pointy Hat that is equally adorable. I was a bit tempted to make one of each but if one sister gets one pompom while the other gets two, someone is going to face accusations of favouritism... and possibly ruin Christmas morning.
If you're a brand new knitter or even a reasonably new knitter looking to step up their game, this pattern is written really, really well and very kindly provides you with resources on three needle bind offs, colour changing and how to make a pompoms and I cords. If you want to learn any or all of these skills this definitely a place to start.

I can't wait for you guys to see the girls in their hats. By the time Christmas rolls around, I'll have finished my intro to photography class and I'll maybe get a little photo shoot in. Now all I have to do is cross my fingers and pray for snow!
